CinéClub Exeter - Divertimento
Divertimento (2022) | 1h50 | Fiction | Comedy-Drama,
BiopicDirected by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar and featuring standout performances by Oulaya Amamra, Niels Arestrup, Lina El Arabi, and Zinédine Soualem, Divertimento is an inspiring tale of determination and passion. Set in the Parisian suburbs of 1995, the film follows 17-year-old Zahia Ziouani and her twin sister Fettouma, whose dreams of becoming an orchestra conductor and cellist are challenged by the social and economic hurdles faced by their Algerian immigrant family. Refusing to give up, they take fate into their own hands by creating their own orchestra, Divertimento—a transformative act that changes the course of their lives.
Based on the incredible true story of Zahia Ziouani, one of the world’s few renowned female conductors, Divertimento celebrates
resilience, courage, and the power of music to break barriers.
The event will be introduced by Stéphanie d’Haussy who will provide some insightful context about the film and its
themes. Following the screening, we’ll open up the floor for an engaging conversation with learners of French,
especially A’level students, who will share their thoughts and perspectives on the film. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone
passionate about French language and culture to express their views and hear from others, all while connecting through the power of
storytelling and animation.
