In 1822, when Champollion presented his method for deciphering hieroglyphs, Thomas Young happened to be in Paris. This conference examines
the relationship between these two key figures and questions whether real rivalry existed between them. By placing their work in the context
of Franco-British tensions surrounding the capture of the Rosetta Stone, it retraces their respective contributions and exchanges, showing
that the story of the 1822 decipherment race is far more complex than usually claimed.
The conference will be held in French, there will be 20 minutes for Q&A at the end of her presentation.
